SMART Monitoring Tools is a free Linux-based command line utility for both monitoring and controlling hard disk and solid state drives, as well as SCSI tape drives and changers.
The Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) is built into most ATA/SATA and SCSI/SAS hard disk and solid state drives. The purpose of SMART is to monitor the reliability of drives, to predict failures, and carry out different types of drive self-tests.
INSTALLATION:
SMART Monitoring Tools is available through Debian repositories by executing the command:
apt install smartmontools
EXECUTION:
Once installed, SMART Monitoring Tools is executed using the command:
smartctl [options] device
This video illustrates how to use SMART Monitoring Tools to examine the SMART tables from both hard disk drives and solid state drives.
